Visiting Bhutan does not only mean visiting sacred monasteries and fortresses and getting blessed. Whether you’re spending your vacation or holiday in Bhutan with your family or partner, you can make it more memorable by including some of these activities besides monasteries and fortresses in your itinerary.

Hot Stone Bath

A hot stone bath or dotsho is a traditional Bhutanese remedy for sore, tired muscles, cold weather, and a stressful day. You soak in a private wooden tub where you sit in one chamber, and hot stones go in another chamber so you don’t touch them. Selective mineral containing river stone is heated over a wood fire until red hot, then dropped into a wooden tub. The stones sizzle and crack, releasing minerals and heating the water. It’s not a spa treatment its mountain therapy, a faster way to recover from a long, tiring hike or day.

Wearing traditional dress (Gho and Kira)

Wearing a national dress is not just about different fabrics and the comfort of having the biggest pocket in the world; it’s what happens after you wear it. Wearing them signals you respect, appreciation, and share joy because the Bhutanese are proud of their dress and love seeing visitors wear them.

Archery and khuru (dart)

Archery isn’t just a sport in Bhutan; it’s a national game and an obsession. It’s not about silence and focus; it’s a joy, a community gathering, a distraction, dancing, howling, whistling, cheering, and a psychologically intense game played between two teams at a target distance range of 150 meters. You can try it in a shorter range, 20-40 meters, with less powerful bows. Your guide will teach you and will be your cheerleader.

River Rafting

Rafting on the Himalayan glacier river is a popular activity among tourists. It’s perfect for scenic floats cutting through pristine valleys and rice fields. You can stop at some of the riverbank and enjoy the moment there. From gears to guides are all international standards.

Kayaking

Kayaking in another that’s finding its rhythm for tourists and locals. Unlike rafting, kayaking will only be allowed to those individuals who have previous experience meeting the safety standards. It’s done in the same river as rafting, or you have the option of choosing another river.

Cycling in Bhutan means riding along empty, curvy mountain roads, past prayer flags and ancient stupas, and descending through dense stands of pine and juniper trees. riding from an elevation of 3100 meters to 450 meters above sea level in the plains along the riverbanks, stopping as you wish to take a picture.

Yoga

Yoga in Bhutan isn’t about studio mats and playlists; it’s about focusing through breathwork at 9000-10000 feet with prayer flags and silence. Yoga here is mostly done blending with nature, with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. The best are winter mornings with crisp surroundings or in summer when the surroundings are lush and wet.

Fly Fishing

Those who are interested in angling in Bhutan are provided with the best option, with multiple Himalayan glacier rivers. It’s just you and prayer flags on the banks, hold the brown trout, native snow trout, or endangered golden mahseer. An experienced fly-fishing guide will be provided. A permit from the Department of Forest and Park Service will be arranged by us.
