This festival celebrates the arrival of the most revered and endangered
bird, the black-necked crane. It is held on November 11 in Gangtay
Goenpa Courtyard. Around 300 -500 cranes migrate from Tibet each
year to Phobjikha Valley, Bhutanese see them as a heavy bird
symbolising longevity and good fortune. School children perform the
famous crane dance wearing black and white costumes, mimicking
the bird. Mask dances and folk songs are performed by monks and
locals.
